November, 2007 - My walk along the shores of the Catawba River.
Growing up in Charlotte, NC (with my mom’s family living just on the other side of the Catawba in Belmont) the Catawba River was just as big to me as the “Mighty Missisip” was to Tom and Huck. As I grew a little older I learned that the river fed the beautiful lakes around Charlotte and was a fun place to go fishing. But, it is just a river, right?
About this picture:
Very little post processing. The river really is this beautiful and I caught the sun just right about an hour before sunset.
Actually, aside from the cool Indian name that I have enjoyed since I was a kid, the river does have purpose. Purpose that I guess we take for granted.
About this picture:
Almost the same scene as above, but here you can see the tree in the middle of the river. At one time, this would have been a nice home for some catfish.
It is the artery of life that feeds Charlotte its energy and drinking water and as our growing city puts more and more demands on our water supply the river is also dramatically impacted by the current drought.
About this picture:
That boat is certainly not going anywhere.
You hear about it and even more recently have likely read about the problems the Catawba river is facing, but to see the beautiful riversides and the ugly impact of the depleting water levels in the same picture is something else.
About this picture:
To me, it looks like the water line on the tire wrapped post should be about where the bridge is in the picture. 5 to 6 feet below normal, would be my guess.
About this picture:
Probalby my favorite composition. From what I could tell, the grass behind is actually bog plants that should be underwater and the pontoon boat in the background is actually sitting in about 3 inches of water (you can see the muddy float line on the side of the pontoon.
About this picture:
Can't see where the water line starts? That is because there isn't much water in this picture - all of the forground is a muddy beach. If you look a the tree line you will see the small streak of water that is now the Catawba River.
About this picture:
No, this is not some kind of hangman’s gallows, it is actually a boat dock and those ropes are for tying up the boat (take a closer look). I am exactly 6 feet tall and this dock was at least a foot above my head.
I will write more soon and perhaps even add a few more pictures as I get out with my camera, but wanted to get these up for you to see. Click on any of these images for a larger view.
Thanks, Jeff
Beautiful but scary, isn't it?
