The panels present the themes of making/building, chaos/creativity, and planning/knowledge.

  • The Statues at the Square <br> These four statures represent Charlotte's past, present and future. With thanks to Sculptor Raymond Kaskey who also created the Queen Charlotte Statue at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The statue of the woman holding up a child represents the "Future" and if you are ever on the square you will notice that all of the other statues are looking toward the future. The 2nd statue is that of a Railroad worker and he represents our "Transportation", everything from our street cars to our air transportation. "Commerce" is represented by our Gold Miner. This area of our country was the location of our nation's first Gold Rush and today Charlotte remains a financial capital, second only to New Your City. The last statue is "Industry" represented by the female textile worker. The textile industry and cotton mills helped transform Charlotte into a booming city.

  • The Grande Disco - Arnaldo Pomodoro<br /> <br /> Placed on the square in 1974, it is one of Charlotte's older pieces of modern art. Based on images from technology and industry, the center of the cog looks like a relief map of a city, and the sculpture is nicely reflected in the adjacent buildings.<br /> <br /> It used to rotate slowly on its axis but was deemed unsafe so it is now stationary. There is a sister piece in Milan, Italy

  • The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Memorial<br /> <br /> Located in front of the City Hall building (600 E. Trade Street) and direct across the street from the Charlotte Police Department.<br /> <br /> Engraved on the wall behind me reads:<br /> "The wicked man flees though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion. - Proverbs 28:1"
  • The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Memorial.<br /> <br /> The fallen officer wears a name tag that says Charlotte and the officer helping him is Mecklenburg
