Old Settler’s Cemetery
Dating back to 1776, this is the city's oldest cemetery.
Charlotte's founder Thomas Polk, wife Susan and son-in-law, Nathaniel Alexander rest here. Nathaniel Alexander was a surgeon-general in the Revolutionary Army as well as a member of the General Assembly for the New State Congress.
In the background you see the back of First Presbyterian Church, organized in 1821. Many assume that the cemetery must belong to the church, but it has aways been owned by the city. The city closed Old Settlers' Cemetery on August 1, 1867, but burials occurred here with special permission until 1884.
