June 27 - Self portrait.

Jeff Groves

  • June 30 - Feeling bubbly!

A very special thanks to Dirkster for the inspiration to purposefully do a self portrait. A thank you to all for the encouragement from my "bubbles and bokeh" photo. I am happy to say that it did make it to the final round for voting. I will let you know if anything comes out of that. This one was done in a dimly lit room, with a black poster board taped to the wall. I pointed the flash towards me instead of the bubble and some 20 shots later this was my best effort. I tried some timer shots so you could see me blowing the bubbles but that was too hard. Maybe I will have to do this again someday with a model blowing the bubbles while I take the photos.
  • June 29 - At the Car Wash

Let me tell you it is always cool and the boss don't mind sometimes if ya act a fool ... at the car wash! - Rose Royce

I'll pulled up the song on you tube to get the lyrics right. I really wish I could make it play automatically when you opened this photo. How cool would that be?
  • June 28 - Brenda's Blackberry Cobbler!
I love my wife, I love living in the South... and I even love fruit for dessert, if it is prepared properly.

You don't see much food on my site, because I always struggle for some reason. I use off camera lighting but never seem to get it right. So, this was a true challenge for me.

Plus, I have said it a million times to my wife and kids. "Food ain't made to look at". I don't know where I picked that up, but it is a part of my regular vocabulary. Needless to say, this didn't last long after the photo was taken. Would you like to know why? Because...
• June 27 - Self portrait.
  • June 26 (with 5mins to spare) - I don't know what kind of a bug this is. It seems like a cross between a fly and what I used to call a sweat bee. And it really was that color.
  • June 25 - Backyard Bubbles and Bokeh.

Back to playing with my bubbles. My fascination with bubbles recently is not a fascination at all. While I do find the colors and reflections captivating, I am actually trying to come up with something suitable for the current Dgrin Challenge called "Circle or Square". There are a lot of good entries in the challenge already, so I was aiming for something cool. This is the best out of this morning's batch, so I very well may end up going with this.

For those that may not know, bokeh is the term used to describe the spherical aberrations that are created in the out of focus area of a photo.

*update: Thanks to TheCuriousCamel for your comment on Bokeh. Click here to see a good description of bokeh by a very trusted source of information, Ken Rockwell.
  • June 24 - In Daddy's arms
  • June 23 - Meet 9 day old, Mckenna Grace Hetrick, with her mom, Julie.
  • June 22 - Wine Pong, for those who take pride in their beer.

I don't play with my beer!

I am kinda proud of myself for how original this idea was and I had several good photos to choose from. Click here to see the other photos that I took during this shoot.
  • June 21 - My Annie!
  • June 20 - To all the Dad's out there, Happy Father's Day!
  • June 19 - Into the ring of fire

Still playing with the glass top desk. Just add one of those 8 inch die cast cars and a little lighter fluid and here you go.
  • June 18 - Bubbles
  • June 17 - Feeling blue.

Playing with strobes, filters and a glass top desk.
  • June 16 - Tickets please.

Nothing too fancy today, I just need to get my pic of the day in. This is the entrance to our "media room". Once we bought the theater seating we realized that our cat liked to knead the new leather. I built this half door primarily to keep her out, but we certainly have enjoyed it.
  • June 15 - Some of my favorite photos from this weekend's Systema, Russian Martial Art workshop.

These guys played rough. To quote Mark Jakabcsin, the instructor, it was a "Hold 'em under water long enough to make 'em uncomfortable. Don't drown anyone and have fun" kind of workshop. Click here to see more photos.

  • June 12 - First attempt at a digital pinhole photograph.

That is right! No lens was used in the making of this photo!

For now you can Click here to see how to make a pinhole lens for your DSLR. Making a slight improvement, I put needle sized hole in a brass shim and then taped it into the inside of the body cap with a large hole.

Notice the dust? Perhaps someone can answer Joe and Dakota's question. I spot cleaned a few, but left others to share this point. I have learned that a pinhole lens is excellent tool to use when spot checking for dust on the digital sensor. With a regular lens and limited depth-of-field, specks of dust are usually blown out of focus to the point of not showing up in the picture. The large depth-of-field provided by the tiny aperture of a pinhole lens causes even the tiniest dust on the sensor to show up in the picture. Thereby, allowing you to detect dust for cleaning (which I now know that I need to do).
  • June 11 - Charlotte Boxer, Lee Campbell (Catching up, so I posted two photos today)

The machine in the white gloves is my buddy, Lee. He has an upper cut that is down right scary. In his corner (with the water bottle), is 62 yr old, Coach Leon Moffett. I wouldn't dare get in the ring with him either.
  • June 11 - Old Plymouth Truck.

This photo was taken while I was in Hendersonville, SC Saturday (06/06)
  • June 9 - Patricia Alcivar

As I finish post processing the photos of Patricia Alcivar from Friday's photo shoot, I thought I would add one more here. She is so cute that it was hard for me to pick just one to post as a daily photo.
